THE STANDARD
What is AS/NZS 3760:2022?
AS/NZS 3760:2022 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for the in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It sets out the requirements for how and how often electrical appliances must be tested in workplaces, rental properties, and other environments where electrical equipment is used by people other than the owner.
Compliance with AS/NZS 3760:2022 is not optional. Under Australian workplace health and safety legislation, employers and persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) have a duty of care to ensure electrical equipment in their workplace is safe to use.

Who Needs to Comply?
If you operate a business, manage a workplace, or own a rental property in Australia, you are likely required to have your electrical equipment tested regularly. This includes:
Employers & PCBUs
Any business with employees is required to ensure all electrical equipment used at work is safe. This applies regardless of business size.
Landlords & Property Managers
Rental property owners are required to ensure electrical equipment provided with the property is safe for tenants.
Contractors & Hirers
Businesses hiring out or using electrical equipment on construction sites or in high-risk environments face stricter testing requirements.
TESTING INTERVALS
How Often Does Equipment Need to Be Tested?
Testing frequency depends on the environment in which the equipment is used. AS/NZS 3760:2022 sets out the following recommended intervals:
