YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Common Questions About Test & Tag

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Vic), employers have a legal duty to ensure the workplace is safe — including all electrical equipment. AS/NZS 3760:2022 is the Australian standard that sets out how portable electrical equipment must be tested and maintained. Compliance with this standard is the recognised way of demonstrating your WHS obligations are being met.

What is test & tag?

est and tag is the process of visually inspecting and electrically testing portable appliances to ensure they are safe to use. Each item that passes is fitted with a tag showing the test date and next due date. It is required under AS/NZS 3760:2022 for all businesses operating in Victoria.

How often do I need test & tag?

Testing frequency depends on the environment your equipment is used in — a construction site, a factory or workshop, and a standard office each have different risk levels and different recommended intervals under AS/NZS 3760. As a general rule, higher-risk environments (like construction and demolition sites) require more frequent testing than low-risk environments (like offices).

We assess your specific workplace and equipment and can advise the correct interval for your situation, then set up reminders so you never miss a compliance deadline.

What equipment needs to be tested?

Any portable electrical equipment — meaning equipment that can be moved while connected to power, or that is unplugged and moved regularly. This includes computers, monitors, printers, power boards, extension leads, kitchen appliances, power tools, and cleaning equipment.

What happens if equipment fails?

Failed equipment is tagged with a FAILED tag and must be taken out of service immediately. We will advise you on whether the item can be repaired or should be replaced. A full list of failed items is included in your compliance report.

Do I get a compliance report?

Yes — every job includes a compliance report documenting what was tested, the results, and the date of testing, so you have clear records on hand for audits, insurance requirements, or WorkSafe inspections.

How long does a Test & Tag job take?

Most standard office or retail jobs are completed in a single visit. The time depends on the number of items to be tested — we’ll give you an accurate estimate when you request a quote.

Can you work outside business hours?

Yes — we’re happy to schedule early mornings, evenings, or weekends to minimise disruption to your business.

Do you charge extra for after-hours or weekend bookings?

Standard rates apply Monday–Friday, 7am–5pm. A call-out surcharge applies for bookings outside these hours, including weekends.
